Silent Animation.

Below is an animated project I finished today. The art is acrylic on watercolor paper, scanned in, animated in Anime Studio 7 and edited together in iMovie. In the coming weeks this will all be mixed with video footage and set to music by another fella. It'll all make more sense at that point.

My son the Marine left for Okinawa, Japan Friday morning and should have arrive early this morning. In the meantime I put together this picture in his honor. He's a big fan of Captain America so should get a kick out of it when he eventually sees it. I've still got some fine-tuning to do, but I think it's coming along nicely. I love doing portraits!!!

I'm doing some work for a bakery. Trying to come up with some branding characters or mascots for them (Think Dennis the Menace to DQ or Ronald McDonald to McD's). This is an unused preliminary sketch. My initial idea was to make them slightly resemble the donuts they enjoy. Huck as a long john, and Berry as a round glazed. But as it's turned out we've decided to go in a different (I think better) direction with the characters. So if anyone really digs these guys and wants to buy them, they're for sale :)

Felt like illustrating We Are The Champions, but couldn't decide how. Then it hit me that I couldn't do better than draw my son, who is now in his 10th week of Basic Training and is making it like a champ. Evelyn is a great little movie starring Pierce Brosnan and based on a real life story of an Irish man trying to keep custody of his children. Tonight, I felt like drawing the pub scene where Brosnan's character and his dad are performing. So here we are. The scene and one of the songs. There's another song I may do from it tomorrow night. Superman has probably been mentioned in more songs than any other superhero. However, this Crash Test Dummies song has always struck a special chord with me. I think it's because in its own quirky way it honors hard, honest work and perseverance. It's also one of my son's favorite Superman songs.

Eye of the Dean

While Eye of the Tiger is commonly associated with Rocky 3, Jensen Ackles - co-star of the television series, Supernatural- really made it his own in the Supernatural outtake that I've tried to capture here. It was a tricky sketch because I wanted to show him just coming out of the car, rather than sitting on it, when he motions to his eyes. This entailed combining three different stills (and a bit of imagination) into a single picture. I'll admit it's not the most flattering picture of Jensen, but nevertheless, I 'm pretty happy with it and I think Matt'll get a good laugh when he sees it.

Last night's Sketch/Quote. I used grayscale Pitt pens for this one which are still kind of new to me. I'm nto altogether happy with the drawing, but it is one of my all-time favorite quotes. If you're not in the know, Joe Vs. The Volcano is a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie. I consider it to be their best.

Once again for this one I stuck in the DVD, went to the frame I needed and proceeded to sketch.

OK, so some explanation is in order on this one. In the process of trying to choose my next song to illustrate I began to think about how much Matthew and I enjoyed the soundtrack to Daredevil the Movie. One of the best songs is Right Before Your Eyes by Hoobastank and it really fits Matt right now with the changes he's experiencing in Basic Training. I naturally didn't care anything about drawing 'Hoobastank', but I did think this would be a fun occasion to draw Matthew as his namesake*. I chose to give him a fun kind of 'Bruce Lee' expression. It's a bit different, but he should get a kick out of it.

*Why would I name my son after a Marvel superhero you may ask? 3 Reasons.

1. I'm a comic nerd.

2. I always liked the Stan Lee/Bill Everett origin story for Daredevil. It's a short, heartfelt story with a touching father/son relationship at its center.

3. I also liked how Daredevil was tagged "The Man With No Fear." Actually, he had lots of fears, but he found the courage to face them and act the hero despite the odds. This was a quality I wanted my son to have.

I'm happy to report that Matthew has lived up to his monicker and is truly a "Man With No Fear" ---and even has red hair like Matthew Murdoch! ... ok, now I'm even scaring myself :)

Trickery: Chapter 3 - Painted!

Due to some other projects which came up this one took a bit longer than anticipated. It also began as a gouache on watercolor paper and then turned into an acrylic. Overall I'm happy with this illustration. Prior to doing it, this place only existed in my mind. Nice to get it out of there and onto paper. Now if I could only find the time to get the other hundred thousand images I have in my mind out and onto paper or canvas!

This is another pencil sketch I've completed for Trickery. Along with an eerie raven, we now have a creepy spider in our story. Cool basement, too - huh? It's basically a combination of my brother's, my dad's and probably Indiana Jones'!

Gouache Trickery

Normally I paint in either watercolor or acrylic, but after not being entirely satisfied with either, I've moved onto guache paints. It's much like watercolor but opaque enough that I can more easily paint dark to light. It's also easier to blend than acrylics. So I'm more or less liking them. Further experimentation is probably needed.

A Blast From the Past.

This is a watercolor re-imagining of the Princess Bride (a favorite in the Wiist household). This commission is from several years ago and is really what started me on the track which led to my current painted work (much of which you can see on either this blog or my website). It's looser than my current work for several reasons: 1) It's watercolor as opposed to the acrylics I now tend to use for much of my commercial work; 2) I was following a slightly different muse back then; 3) I've naturally gotten more adept at using brushes.

43 PB&J

A friend, noticing that President Obama has his own Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, Yes, We Pecan!, asked me what kind of ice cream I imagined President George W. Bush would have. Taking matters like this seriously, I did my research.

The Flavor: I quickly decided the flavor would have to be PB&J since President Bush's idea of heaven is a sandwich slathered with creamy peanut butter and red raspberry jelly.

The Name: President Bush is known as "43" because he's the forty-third president and also because it distinguishes him from "41" - his father, the former President George H.W. Bush. 43 PB&J has a nice rhythym to it and is a simple way to distinguish 43's favorite flavors.

The Company: Based in Texas, ranked as one of the top 3 best selling ice creams in the country, Blue Bell Creamery is a natural fit for his ice cream. Their packaging also has a traditional look that suits him.

The Branding Logo: I kept Blue Bell's traditional colors and fonts, but reduced their logo. I applied a photoshop filter to an AP photo of the President to create a branding image that projects Bush 43's own homespun, folksy nature. Blue Bell will sometimes place a red banner across the cows at the bottom, so I replaced that red banner with an American flag. It fits well with their regular line, but at the same time also distinguishes this ice cream as being special.

The Product: I snagged a photo from Blue Bell's website of their vanilla ice cream and manipulated so it would resemble PB&J ice cream. Once again going into Photoshop I selected each scoop, adjusted the hue/saturation and after some other experimentation came up with something I wouldn't mind sampling.

When you have the chance, do yourself a flavor and buy some Blue Bell ice cream!

The best donut I've ever found in both taste and value is at the Circle K by the airport on Hwy 41 in Evansville, IN. It comes plain, chocolate slathered (as seen here) or with carmel and nuts. It's AMAZING! It can feed a family of 4 for THREE DAYS!! And it's only $1.35!!!!

Last Spring I was hired to digitally color some pencils for a short Scratch-N-Sniff children's book. Well, the book is now published and you can find it at your local Target near the front of the store in their dollar section. Give it to a kid you love. I'm told they are selling very well. The name of the book, as you can see above, is "Lunch Time." Fitting that a book about food would be my first Scratch-N-Sniff!

On March 21st, Good Friday, StagePost Studios in Nashville, TN asked me to complete 66 frames of art for an animatic presentation to be finished by March 25th. Hey, no problem! Below is the result. Fun project. Hope to do much more for them in the future.
